WHISTLER!!!

It's been a while since I made a post, partly because it's felt like summer and so I've been outside a lot, but also because I have been traveling a little bit.

A group of us took a trip to Buffalo, to take in a couple hockey games, spend some time with family, and attempt to energize the Sabres as they run into the playoffs.

Continuing with my skiing, had a wonderful opportunity to check out Whistler, and its awesome adaptive ski program. Spent a week out there, and three full days on the slopes, attempting to master the bunny hill. Near solo missions were accomplished. The photos below are from the Wednesday and the great sunny, groomed conditions we had. We also skied the Monday and Friday, but because of large snow falls the hill was not as friendly to my sit ski.

Whistler is quite the place and I would recommend it to everyone, just a tad on the pricey side!

Back to the hill!

This past saturday I had the opportunity to trying skiing. A guy I met this past summer through a common friend skis and got a hold of me to come out to try it. It was a great fundraiser put on by the Regina Adaptive ski program out at Mission Ridge (Fort Qu'appelle). A full days worth of fun, food and great weather. I really enjoyed being back on the hill learning how to ski sitting down. Very different view! I had some wonderful help from the organizers and volunteers who extremely patience and understanding. I can't wait to get back out.

Some explanation. I am sitting strapped to a glorified sled, mounted to two skis, that when I lean to one side allow me to edge in that direction. I have little skis mounted to my arms for balance and stability and also to help steer. This is the equipment I used, check out the results.

So, thoughts that first came to mind on the drive to the hill- do I really want to be a toboggan and/or do I really want to be a snowball. Well, you will have to watch the videos below!!

Walk Aid

We have recently become aware of a device that can assist me with my lazy (uncoordinated) left leg. I have worn what some would call an AFO and most would call a leg brace to hold my left foot at 90 degrees to my left leg. It prevents my foot from dragging which greatly inhibits my ability to walk with a proper gait. So what this device does, called the Walk Aid, electrically stimulates the muscles in my left leg that pick up my toes and foot so that they clear when I step through. We (being me, my physio and my orthotics specialist) have been trying it for nearly a month with fairly good results and so I wanted to share what it is and how it works. From the video you can't really see it because it is strapped just below my left knee but you will hear a beep every time my left knee bends which is my leg getting zapped. Fun!

If the results continue to be positive then I hope to purchase a unit for long term use!

I had a chance to participate in a fundraiser for Project Walk down here. It was a showcase of people who have some ability to walk. It was a great atmosphere and although a little nerve racking, as you can see I did not wipe out.

Well, plans came together very last minute and at the time of this post I have been down in California for a whole week already. What a great feeling leaving the snow behind. I know I will be eating those words when I return mid November, but I will be enjoying the sun, the beach and flip flops, for at least another few weeks.

I have had 4 solid workouts back at PW and below is a short clip of a few familiar exercises.

I have already noticed differences from my last visit in that I have increased endurance to complete my workouts and I also have energy left for the rest of the day.

The summer finished up stronger then it started. Weather wise, definitely, but physically I bounced back pretty good. My energy is returning. My schedule remained the same, physio twice a week, intertwined with gym workouts three days a week. I am still progressing, but like a slug or turtle Made it out to the beach most weekends. I have started the process of getting my drivers license back. Many steps are to be taken, but I have been told 'that we will find a way to make it happen'. You won't see me on the road anytime soon though. Maybe in the golf cart around the beach.

I am planning my next trip to California! Hopefully all the details will fall into place. I will keep you posted.

Two Years and Fighting...

Today is a day to take note. Two years post and I am not sure exactly what to think. Big changes had and big changes to come. I have survived so far and will continue to do so.

I know its been awhile since I made a post and this is mostly because I have been fighting with my body to keep moving forward. I have had a couple not so progressive months and have taken this time to reevaluate, alter, and actively rest my journey. I am still progressing and my internal fight still exists, but my body has been asking for a short hiatus. We have temporarily lightened work outs and slowed the pace somewhat.

I really don't have much video or picture to add except for this birthday present that I got last year that I finally had the chance to use. Below is a video of me riding my new one speed cruiser with my industrial sized anti-tip over wheels. Its still in its virgin runs but it looks like it has good freedom potential.

I hope everyone is doing well and now that the weather is finally warm in our wonderful province you can catch me at the beach.

The Latest!!

The next step, as shown below, is about finding the ability to walk with very little support. My physio does have a strong hold of me just above my hips on the white belt, but this is no walker, crutches or canes. It is a very unrealistic situation in the near future for me, but at this point it is maximum energy output but also maximum stimulation of all muscle groups, which means progress!

So I really feel like a waddling penguin here because I am dressed in black and have my hands nervously stashed in my pockets.

I wanted to inform everyone of some recent accomplishments of mine. At Wascana, twice a month we have been challenging my body to endurance walking sessions. As shown a little while back in a post, we use the squeaky upright walker to achieve our goals. My latest distance and time is approximately 400 meters in 27 minutes. Its a hell of a workout!

I also wanted to let everyone know that I am beginning to organize some upcoming fundraisers!

A Year-and-a half Benchmark!

So I just want to give her an update on how things have been going for me over the last few weeks. Today, the 22nd of January marks a year and a half since this new journey in my life began. I have much to take away from this. Surrounding yourself with family and friends makes any difficult situation much easier to handle and manage and having these people also keeps you on track and in line. I have also learned a lot about myself and how I cope when life throws a curveball. I have definitely had my ups and downs but the progression is still uphill - this battle never ends! Physically I'm doing everything I can to stay strong and ready for each up-and-coming workout, but the mental side of all this is so much tougher to deal with. I struggle day in and day out to find the energy to stay determined, motivated and sane. So far so good though, as the results I am seeing from physio and gym workouts is fantastic!

So I wanted to say a hello and thank you to everyone out there for their continued support and I hope to see everyone at some point.

The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person's determination.

Great achievement involves great risk!

I wanted to make a small addition to the last post that I did about broken wheelchair that I had. Here is a picture of the Savior!

The last few weeks have been very good at the gym and rehab has been going well. We are still seeing good gains throughout my whole body. all in So below is the latest video from my training. In this video we are doing kneelups and I have 20 pounds of weight hanging on my arms.

Hello to all! I know its been a while, so I apologize for that! It has been a very busy last couple months. I was in Toronto at the beginning of Nov. for a national SCI Conference. Very informative and interesting to see where research is headed in Canada on SCI. Although the majority of the info was geared towards new injuries it showed good post-injury potential. It keeps my hopes up.

Last weekend we were in Buffalo, New York to catch some Sabres hockey games. It was great getting family together and a trip like that is always a ton of fun. We had a mishap with my wheelchair - having a flat tire getting off the plane, so I spent my weekend unable to get it fixed leaving me in the "comforts" of a rickety beast of a chair.

The gym and physio have been pretty good. We have had some struggles with my upper body but my core and lower body have been consistently stronger with each workout. We have been attempting to work on endurance walking so below is a small caption of one of my latest walks. My record so far is 218 metres without stopping.

Hello all! Happy belated thanksgiving!

I hope everyone is doing well as fall sets in and we get a teaser of winter.

I have been okay the last while. Fighting the odd cold and a few minor infections have set me back energy wise but I am now feeling better and re-energized. Ready to keep fighting.

Below is a clip from Wascana yesterday. When my body is feeling adventurous and mentally strong we as a rehab team leave the walker parked and push my body to its current limits. A little more like freedom. They are grasping my hips for support as we take steps around the room for about 15 or 20 meters. A very familiar feeling but overwhelmingly scary at the same time.

Hello all! Life is good. I have been busy getting back to the gym for workouts. Progress forward!! I am working out with a family friend who owns 'Adrenaline', a personal training studio. I am also back at Wascana Rehab a couple days a week for physio and occupational therapies. Workouts are strong, intense and exactly what is pushing my body to gain strength.

In my down time I have been at the lake soaking up the sun and enjoying the weather. All to soon will winter be here. Nothing else to add at this point as this is my current routine. Thanks to all for their kind words and encouragement and I hope everyone is well.

First year into ....

....today is one year. One year of re-learning, re-training and re-discovering myself. Today I am undecided as to how I feel about this particular day, but I do know how blessed I am to be surrounded by great people, family and friends. To all, I want to say the biggest thank you! My heart holds and shares a spot for everyone! It has been a tough day...and an even tougher year..

Great strides are being made in my recovery. I feel strong, motivated and determined. In one year I have gained back what some believed would not happen - how I will continue to prove to them otherwise. I have no doubt about my abilities to overcome this injury, the only variable is time....

I have taken some down time to relax for a couple days, but start back with physio this Monday. I will be filling in spaces with a personal trainer and we are back in Saskatchewan speed. What a great feeling!!

Dick's Last Resort Restaurant downtown San Diego - be prepared for some head-gear!

Sorry guys, it has been a little while since the last post. I have been putting in the extra effort at PW and squishing in all the extracurriculars within driving distance!

I celebrated a great 27th birthday...(well behaved of course!), got some sun and for some reason got hooked on dirty martinis!!!

We have finished our stay down south and are back June 30th. It has been a great trip, producing fantastic progress and I would like the thank everyone for everything that they have offered! The fight will continue and I hope to see all of you soon!

So, here we have some photos from the 'family' trip to Disneyland and California Adventures. What a great place, a tad busy, but tons of fun!

Wednesday was another intense day at PW. This is the third week being here and i am still loving it. Progress continues as does the battle even with some bruises, scraps and falls. The video is me free standing between two tables catching and throwing a ball - great for balance! Appreciate hearing all the continued support, it really motivates me to push harder every day. A Tough Monday at PW

We spent a good weekend staying out of trouble. Some more family flew in on Saturday and as a group of seven we did Disneyland all day Sunday. What a place that is! (pictures to follow soon this week).

So we finally were able to get some video up on the blog again from today at PW. We had a real good day, felt real strong, spent the last two hours of my session up on my feet and here is a couple of videos from my morning. The first one is me standing at the hand bike and the second video is the best walking we have done so far.

Wednesday I took my first steps at Project Walk. I hadn't been up on my feet in a while so it was a weird feeling again but they were some of the best steps that I have taken. We've been working really hard on my left leg to try and catch it up to my right leg and although it has a long way to go it's getting stronger.

We spent the day at Sea World, got some cool pictures of some of the animals. Shamu the killer whale waved at me.

We had a great weekend! Saturday we took in a mexican festival, Cinco de Mayo, in old town San Diego. Sunday we cruised North to check out some beaches: Huntington beach, Laguna beach, Newport beach- not like you've ever seen on tv but the beaches are HUGE!

Wednesday April 23rd was my last day at Wascana. A good day, but a sad day! We did manage to get one last walk in to give us all an idea of where I have succeeded to in the last 9 months and sets a benchmark for the next step for me.

It appears that my time has come to really take that next step along this journey. I will be moving out of Wascana Rehab and into the comforts of home with mom and family. Some 280 days of intensity, achievement, perseverance and friendship thus far will not end, it is the continuance of my life relearning and re-teaching my body to do what I want and need it to do.

The initial plan as of next Saturday, April 26 is to catch a plane to california, to attend a specialized spinal chord rehab facility for two months of continued ass kickings. At "Project Walk", I, along with numerous family members, will be learning and further developing my potential.

Pool therapy has been very successful in my rehab and below is my 2nd attempt to escape my session early that day. The first ended quicker than expected, the warm water got the best of me and need I say more.... stretching session anyone?

We have stepped up the intensity of walking recently to two sessions a day, a walk in the morning and then a brief jaunt in the afternoon. I have added video below of one of the most recent afternoon sessions. I won't however, tell you about the most recent 'floor' exercises I was trying out this week... lets just say - if you are going to fall, do it with style. Not to worry though, it turned into a learning experience - I never realized I could do my stretches on the ground - who needs an adjustable bed anyways!

The next STEPS!

So, Wednesday became the next big step on this journey. As you will see below we attempted to walk with one crutch on my right arm. This turned into quite a successful attempt. After a few practice steps my confidence allowed my Physio's to let me free, although they are hanging on to the back of me it is only for safety. I apologize for the small video.....

Moving ahead!

Walking has become a key focus in my rehab for the last month or so. Each day, we work on strengthening activities focusing on my core and legs to help regain more balance. Throughout the weeks I have slowly gained the balance and coordination to walk more and more and start to do it more independently each day. Everyday, we work on my ability to stand up from the physio bed, with each time, needing less help.

This 1st video shows standing from the bed (from 20 inches)...

This 2nd video is what I have been working on the most! As I gain more strength, I am able to walk with less help and for longer distances. This video is the most recent progress of me walking. For the past couple months, I have been working on walking with 4 people, then down to 3, then we moved onto using a walker and now, we are down to 2 people, with a little help! (notice she lets go of my left hand for a bit)...

Here is Joel working out on the leg press. He can push 40 lbs with his right leg and and 20lbs (same number of reps) with the left leg.

Joshua and Alana came in to Regina on a surprise visit during reading week. This was a huge and wonderful surprise to all of us. Here Josh and Joel are standing together. Can you notice how hard Joel is working on balance for him to be able to stand.

Thanks for the great fundraiser and a really fun time. The Poverty Plainsmen did a fantastic job of entertaining the crowd and everyone danced up a storm. Even the hippo beach representative stayed up way past a hippo's bedtime!

Welcome to 08 everyone! I had a wonderful holiday season, busy both in town and at the beach with family and friends. It was great seeing everyone. I have been pretty tired lately but i am diligently working on continuing to take steps and standing for increased lengths of time. Took my truck for a drive on the lake with some weary passengers - who did survive the trip. I really miss driving. FYI - wheelchairs suck in the snow, I nearly ended up making snow angels a few times.

I want to again thank all for your empowering support, recovery is happening!!

P.S. - any food including leftovers would be great alternative to Wascana mystery meat.

So with the week winding down and holidays beginning, I will be heading home to Mom's house until Christmas eve. Then out to Regina Beach with the old man. No plans for New Years yet, but I do hope to get out snowmobiling. I hope everyone has a safe and a wonderful holiday season! Hey everyone,

Just a quick post and info about Jen's fundraiser that is going to be going on at Moxie's in Regina. Please have a look! (For those that don't know, Jen is also at Wascana with Joel, and was injured a week before him.) This pic is a few moths old and it is important to note the two of them have come a long way since then!

On July 14, 2007 Jennifer Gabrysh's life changed forever. The then 25 year old student, yoga instructor, and server at Regina's Moxie’s Classic Grill broke her neck in a swimming accident at Regina Beach. Jen, now a quadriplegic, is an inspiration to all those who hear her story.

Moxie’s staff and management are holding a restaurant-related fundraiser to support Jen’s “Wing’s of Hope” Foundation. Between January 10 – February 10, 2008 a portion of all proceeds collected from Moxie’s menu items the Wor Won Ton Noodle Bowl, Bites of Brownie, and Pints of Molson Canadian will directly contribute to Jen’s foundation and goal of further rehabilitation.

Our fundraising goal is raise $8000-$10,000 to financially assist Jennifer in attending Project Walk, an intensive rehabilitation institute in San Diego, California.

Sorry for the delay in posts. Joel is doing great and is counting down the days until he can see his family at Christmas! Other than that he has been continuing to work hard at physio and is getting lots of rest. The cold weather doesn't help much when trying to get out, but Joel has been continuing to spend some QT with friends and family and of course with Jen! Thanks again for the continued positive thoughts and energy! And again, Joel will be doing his own post soon.

Joel Bancescue always believed he'd walk again.

His faith was rewarded on Thanksgiving Day.

"I was at the park with my mom and my right leg kind of kicked and moved on its own and that was the kick start to my recovery," Bancescue said. "Thanksgiving truly was what it is."

The Regina man broke his neck at Regina Beach when he went for an early morning swim at a private beach on July 22. He couldn't move his body or feel any sensation when he was rushed to the Regina General Hospital. Later he learned that he had a fractured C4 and C5 vertebra and contused spine. After five days in ICU he had surgery that placed four screws with rods attached to them on either side of his neck.

He moved to the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre on Aug. 8 and as a result of intensive therapy and intestinal fortitude, the 26-year-old took a big step in his recovery with some small steps on Nov. 7.

"Now they have me using a walker with a couple of people making sure that my legs stay straight and move properly and there's a couple of people around for safety," Bancescue said.

While his left leg doesn't function as well as his right, he's proud of his progress, especially when willing his body to function is mentally and physically draining.

"I never realized how much brain power you need to move," he said.

"When I was first in the hospital after my injury, I really didn't have any arm movement, so to reach up to my face was really a mental process. I had to think about what muscles I needed to lift and what arm movement needed to occur to do that. Now, after a lot of repetition, it's become ingrained again."

Usually upbeat, the Regina man has had down days since the accident. He credits his strong support network of family, friends and staff for lifting his spirits. His girlfriend Jacqui Swedburg said Bancescue's attitude inspires those around him.

"Every single person that he's met has commented on how his positive attitude inspires them," she said.

When Bancescue took his first steps in the physio department, patients and staff wildly clapped and cheered.

"It was really inspiring -- everyone recognized what we'd just accomplished," Bancescue said. "Nobody knows what kind of progress you're going to make or where you're going to get."

He's thankful for several fundraisers that have raised more than $50,000 for him and allowed him to buy an old wheelchair accessible van. The balance is earmarked for specialized equipment and medical costs down the road.

On weekends Bancescue regularly stays at his mom's house and throughout the week he goes out with friends.

"We go out to movies, to concerts and we were out for Grey Cup," he said. "There's a lot of logistics to consider when you go out, but you learn to work around them."

He plans to spend part of the Christmas holidays at Regina Beach.

"The first time I went back after the accident was for my Grandma's 85th birthday," he said. "I haven't been back to where the accident happened, but the beach is a place that I love so I'll always go back."

As long as he continues to make progress, he plans to stay at the rehab centre.

"When I plateau, I guess that means I'll get discharged, but I'm hoping to use as much of the therapy here as I can," Bancescue said. "I've met a whole new community of people -- it's great.

"Obviously I wouldn't have wanted the accident to happen, but it's really strengthened relationships with my family and friends. You see a whole different side of people."

Weekend!!!

After what seemed like a long week, it is finally the weekend! Joel plans on going home again for Saturday night. Other than that, he will probably be hangin at his house which is just getting the finishing touches and looks amazing --thanks to Shayne, Hippo Beach Posse, Danny, and all the people who pitched in. Thanks again Damon for not only helping out but also finding more help to get the renos done! On another note, we just passed the 4 month mark of Joel's accident on the 22nd. To see his improvement, strength, and wonderful attitude is really something to be admired. HE has such an impact on people that everyone seems to end up hanging out in his room! He has even been recruited to join wheelchair curling! If you want to reach him this weekend, call his cell or stop by his house or Wascana.

Grey Cup Comes Home!

After so many years the Grey Cup has finally come home! Joel enjoyed it at a great party, and then went out to Soho later on. Got to see a ton of people he hadn't in a while and it was a great time! Joel also went to see some curling and got to hang out at home with Jen and her dad. The weekend has been so wonderful, let's hope it continues in to the rest of his week! He continues to gain strength throughout his body and mind, and is focused on keeping that momentum going. Again, Joel will be doing his own post soon, so please keep a look out for it! (His hand strength, especially in his right hand, continues to improve all the time), but we can't guaruntee that what he writes will have a PG-rating! Just kidding. But do look for it!

Grey Cup

This weekend Joel will be going to a curling tournament, wheelchair rugby tournament, and will be watchin the Grey Cup! Please call on cell to track him down or join up with and go out with. The week has been a little rough, and definitely feels like it has been a long one. But he continues to work hard and get the job done! Also, to the Grade 4 and 5's over at Hunt School: Thank you for all the support! Joel LOVES hearing from you guys and is looking forward to coming to your class sometime!

Hey everyone! It was a great game on Sunday that was fully enjoyed at the Imax! I can't wat for this weekend! This week is already proving to be very challenging, but very rewarding with physio. I am continuing to take steps and work on my hands and basically all over. I am also testing out a few other chairs and trying to find the best one for me. Baby Steps

Hey everyone! I would like to share some very exciting and encouraging things that have been happening the past couple of weeks. I am able to stand up (with assistance), and now this week we have begun to take our first steps towards walking. Basically, when I first did it, it was on a treadmill with a harnesss. My right leg works very well, and my left leg is lagging behind in strength and mobility, but it wants to work. Now we have moved on to walking continuous steps across the floor (but keep in mind it's with much assistance still - with physiotherapists etc). However, it is a HUGE step in my recovery and I am very proud! I do have video and hope to upload if I can figure out how. I would like to send my love to everyone for continued support and prayers... We are DOING IT!

Last night was a blast! Thanks to an awesome guy, we got to go backstage at Modest Mouse and watch the concert. It was great! We also got to experience what band members actually think when they hear two women and a guy in a locked stall in the Men's bathroom. Let's just say it was both extremely embarrassing and completely hilarious! The week continues to be great and I am thinking of possibly adding some more therapy-type things to my already wonderful physio. If you know of other things you think might help, let me know. Hey everyone! It's been a good weekend with a trip home to watch the football game, and a couple of nights spent at home. I also went to see Into the Wild, a great movie, and spent a lot of time getting some r and r on the couch. Tomorrow night I am going to Modest Mouse and am looking forward to the long weekend and heading out to the beach. I will update again soon and have some more sweet pics! Who would have thought a hang of Hippos would have the weekend energy to paint an entire house not once but twice! Now don't get me wrong, I can't use the word lazy, BUT slow movement with grace might be a better way to describe the hang that showed up. On another note, I would like to really thank ALL of you for attending the painting party. The house looks AWESOME! I even got to check out the upstairs: thanks for the lift! It's just another day in Joel's life. Ya know, hanging out with the Stanley Cup at the Ruby. And this isn't the replica, this is the REAL deal, spelling mistakes and all. The way to tell is by the bottom of the Cup. The replica does not have the logo. Joel and Brent (his buddy from work in the middle picture) were just some of the lucky few who got to actually HOLD it, thanks to Mike, the Keeper of the Cup! He is also proud to say that he got to see his cousin Drew Miller's name on it first hand.

I hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend full of family, friends and food. I think we all expect to gain a little bit of weight this weekend, loooove the turkey. (FYI my mom told me that she has seen a ninety pound turkey) On a skinnier note, therapy great this week with some additions of pool time and weight lifting. I've got an updated wheelchair something more sweet and metallic like (with a clock - don't ask why). Big thanks to the Cibart family for lending us their summer cruiser (a VW van)! On friday I took my first trip back to work to visit the guys at the sound stage and see what the movie Walled In looks like. Saturday I went to the beach for thanksgiving supper, Sunday I enjoyed anothing thanksgiving supper in the city and today was round three for me!
On a sadder note, my cousin Matt passed away and I would appreciate it if everyone would join in a moment of silence to send thoughts and prayers to our cousin Matt and his family.

It's been a few days since we posted so sorry about that! Joel has had a busy week so far. He went in the pool and did water rehabilitation; got a smaller and lighter chair which is again being traded up for another one; and continues to impress during physio. He has also had a few nights out on the town. He has been to the Imax and to Viet Thai. And last night it was Jen's 26th birthday, so a bunch of people, including Joel went to Tepanyaki's to celebrate. It's getting easier to get out now too with access to the Wascana Van Kaley's super-speed at getting Joel in and out of the van! This weekend he may try and get out to the beach again for Thanksgiving. But Joel will be posting an update soon and looks forward to seein you guys!

Hey everyone,

This week has been fantastic. I got my beard back, and I got a new ride. I can wheel a lot further now, and I am starting some extra weight lifting at the gym to help out with that. I also get some time to display my speedo in the pool. Oh yeah! Hope to keep seein all you and we will be planning a big get together in the next few weeks, so stay tuned!

I also got rid of the flowers on the cupboards. Actually, pretty much got rid of the whole kitchen! Can't wait to post updated photos soon. The work has been amazing!

Danny and the boys, and some girls too, also built a deck on the front and are using a previous one from Corner Gas on the back, and fixed up the entire basement. Again, much thanks!

I had an incredible Friday night at the steak dinner fundraiser at the beach. Much love goes out to all who attended, supported and enjoyed. A special thanks to Kim, Brenda and Debbie who made everything happen Friday night! I had a great time.
Saturday afternoon we went to the rider game, I want to thank Jim Hopson for the tickets and his generousity with everything this weekend. I had a chance to get out Saturday night on the town a little bit, enjoyed everyones company and seeing people I hadn't seen for a while. I got some good quality family time in as well. House renos have continued and I hope to have some updated pictures soon.
